Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology
The department of obstetrics and gynecology has 6 units which includes:-
Outpatient Clinic
Each unit runs an outpatient clinic to follow up patients attending outpatient clinic including those discharged from the wards and new patients referred from other centers but did not need admission. These are patients with chronic or long standing illnesses such as cancer patients, dysfunctional uterine bleeding, post op follow up patients, patients with infertility etc.
Ward Rounds.
In each ward, ward rounds are conducted on daily basis by intern doctor/registrar/resident/specialist. Major ward rounds are done twice a week by specialist along with other junior doctors. Evening teaching rounds are done daily for the admitting ward.
Training.
The department is involved in training undergraduates’ medical students and postgraduate MUHAS residents. We are also involved in training intern doctors and nurse students and from time to time we receive students from other countries.
Acute Care Unit/Feta Maternal Medicine
Deals with patients admitted with acute/severe illnesses and need close monitoring and care until they stabilize. Such conditions include severe pre eclampsia, eclampsia, patients with complication of anaethesia, meningitis in pregnancy, severe respiratory distress in pregnancy, unconscious patients etc. patients get close monitoring and management and once have stabilized are transferred to the normal wards (antenatal and postnatal wards).
General Gynecology Unit
The general gynecology unit has 4 wards namely firm I, II, III and IV. These firms admit patients with variety of conditions including abnormal vaginal bleeding, uterine fibroids, rape cases etc.
General Obstetric Unit.
The general obstetric unit has 4 wards namely firm I, II, III and IV. These firms admit patients with variety of conditions including Pregnancy induced hypertension, patients for prenatal care, intranatal care and post natal care, puerperal psychosis, puerperal sepsis, anemia in pregnancy, UTI in pregnancy etc
Gynecology-Oncology Unit
Deals with patients admitted with tumors and malignancies involving female reproductive system which include ovarian tumors, vulva tumors, endometrial tumors etc. this unit will work hand in hand with Ocean Road Cancer institute.
Urogynecology Unit
Urogynecology unit deals with all patient admitted due variety of conditions involving female reproductive system including urinary incontinence, vesicle vaginal fistula, genital prolapse, recurrent Urinary tract infection etc
