Research, Training and Consultancy Unit

This unit has been established to oversee all teaching, research and consultancy(TRC) activities at Muhimbili National Hospital (MNH). The unit is one among eight units that reports directly to the Executive Director (ED) according to current organization structure. It is entrusted to the responsibility of coordinating all Teaching, research and consultancy activities conducted at the hospital.

Core Functions

This section is responsible for reviewing MNH research policy and make recommendation to the management, furthermore it is responsible for coordinating and monitoring research activities at MNH and ensure research findings are translated into quality improvement of clinical practice. The section also coordinates activities of the MNH institutional review board (IRB) and make sure research are done following international accepted standards

Other Functions

The section is also responsible for establishing research links with local as well as international institutions, involved in seeking research funds and Establish and coordinate MNH Medical Journal where research findings can be published furthermore, it Develops and oversee budgets and polices and procedures for research and development. Encourage and stimulate MNH community to conduct research in order to a dream of establishing a research and publication center

Teaching Coordination

The unit is responsible for:

    • coordination of teaching activities for both local and international students.
    • Receives, process and approves applications for elective and internship, research for both local and foreign students (see application form)

Consultancy Coordination

The units coordinates and monitor consultancy work at MNH and ensure standards are in place for staffs involved in consultancies.

MNH will accomplish objectives by using all available resources to continually ensure best value for patients and stakeholders. This strategic planning process directs available resources to achieve strategic goals in the most cost effective manner. MNH shall collaborate with the Ministry of Health (Government), Muhimbili University College of Health Sciences (MUHAS), Muhimbili Orthopaedic Institute (MOI), Ocean Road Cancer Institute (ORCI), the Dar es Salaam Municipal and other referral hospitals to deliver the highest quality services within existing resources.


MNH is committed to ensure the security of the Hospital. MNH will work proactively with patients, employees, and Hospital security officials to maintain a secure work environment for patients, staff, and Hospital assets.
