Department of Outpatients Services

The department was one of first established department in the modern history Muhimbili Hospital. In 2006 the previously Casualty Department underwent major transformation which resulted into the two units hot and cold clinics being upgraded and transformed into Emergency Medicine Department (EMD) and Outpatient Services Department (OPSD) respectively.

1.1 Structure:

The Department of Outpatient Services comprises of four main units:-

  1. General OPD
  2. Staff Clinic
  3. New OPD

1.2 Location:

At the main entrance of the Muhimbili National Hospital, at NOPD adjacent Maternity building and right wing of Ocean Road Cancer Research Institute

1.3 Services offered in respective clinical units:

  1. At General OPD and At Staff Clinic
  2. Health education and counseling
  3. General consultations
  4. Health check clinics at weekends
  5. Medical examination
  6. . Vaccination (anti-rabies & anti-tetanus)
  7. Diagnostic services in collaboration with other departments
  8. Pharmacy for NHIF

1.3.1 At New OPD

  1. HIV/AIDS, Anti-retroviral treatment and counseling
  2. Super specialized consultations with respective units (Cardiology, Pulmonology, Gastroenterology, Nephrology, Neurology, Nephrology and hematology)
  3. Specialized consultations with respective departments (Diabetes and Endocrinology, Dermatology, Infectious clinics (STI and HIV) Ophthalmology, Dental and Surgery, Obstetrics &Gynecology)
  4. . Specialized Endoscopic diagnostic (Bronchoscopy, Gastroduodenoscpy, Colonoscopy and ERCP), EEG, nerve conduction test, Muscle conduction test and therapeutic services
  5. Specialized Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) services (Audiology and Speech therapy)
  6. Dental therapeutic and cosmetic services

The services are provided by a team of well learned and experienced senior doctors, junior doctors and nurses comprising one super specialist, for provision of best quality services to as many out-patients as possible with the aim of:-

  1. Providing the wide range of general and specialised services of quality health care for the people, for the Treatment of their ailments; and ways to Prevention of diseases (Health Education).
  2. Insuring that the services are available from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm from Monday to Friday.
  3. Providing services to all irrespective of cast, creed, religion and financial status.
  4. Provision of assistance for training of health workers and in the medical research. At the new Outpatient clinic there is a well planned and coordinated time table to cater for all superspeciality clinics all over the hospital to make sure that our patients receive first class superspeciality medical care.

MNH will accomplish objectives by using all available resources to continually ensure best value for patients and stakeholders. This strategic planning process directs available resources to achieve strategic goals in the most cost effective manner. MNH shall collaborate with the Ministry of Health (Government), Muhimbili University College of Health Sciences (MUHAS), Muhimbili Orthopaedic Institute (MOI), Ocean Road Cancer Institute (ORCI), the Dar es Salaam Municipal and other referral hospitals to deliver the highest quality services within existing resources.


MNH is committed to ensure the security of the Hospital. MNH will work proactively with patients, employees, and Hospital security officials to maintain a secure work environment for patients, staff, and Hospital assets.
