Directorate of Information  and  

Communications Technology

Directorate of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) is mandated to oversee Management of Hospital Information Systems activities within Muhimbili National Hospital (MNH). This includes Information Technology, Medical Records and Telephone infrastructure with a total of 101 employees. It is made up with three functional areas which are Information Technology, Medical Records and Telephone

Information Technology:The department has state-of-the art IT infrastructure that supports all hospital functions. It has the computer network that covers the whole Muhimbili National Hospital area with capacity to support over 400 nodes. Interlink between buildings is through fiber optic to make sure that speed is not compromised. With massive network infrastructure comes over 360 computers that are attached to it.

The hospital functions are run through the integrated hospital management information system (HMIS) application called Jeeva. Jeeva is visual basic based application tailor made to work as per MNH environment. It was implemented in 2004, a project which took two years to be completed. Currently all hospital functions from patients’ registration to discharge, human resource management, payroll, finance, supplies, Laboratory, pharmacy are all run through Jeeva system.

Medical records: This department is the custodian of all patients’ records. Records are currently created and maintained physically and electronically. All registration, appointments setting and file tracking is carried out electronically. The activities within department are supported by 60 employees.

Telephone: This unit is tasked to overseeing internal and external telecommunications. Currently we have state of the art telephone system (PHILLIPS based PABX) with 175 internal telephone extensions and 16 trunk lines. The system was installed in 2004 and since then it has been very helpful in controlling, monitoring and management of expenditure. The unit is supported by 12 employees, 10 are telephone operators and two technicians.

Impact of Information Technology at Muhimbili National Hospital

Integration of IT into electronic registration of all patients by capturing their demographic variables has made easy to track lost records, lessen time to register patient and created a reliable data source. Read more..
