Directorate of Nursing and Quality

     

Muhimbili National Hospital is re-known for the high quality nursing care and provision of excellent patient services in the country, regionally and globally. Professionalism is an aspect we pride ourselves in; we take great care to recruit and retain nurses of high caliber who are committed to patient care. To achieve that quality of care, procedures, policies and standards have been put in place using international bench marks. Regular internal audits are done to ensure that the care at any time is improved. The nursing division is the hospital's backbone in medical care giving patients a positive hospital experience and a conducive environment for quick recovery .


The Directorate of Nursing operates in all clinical disciplines and non clinical disciplines covering the inpatients (wards), outpatients (clinics), Accident and Emergency, health education/staff training, counselling, special units etc. It has an establishment of about 900 nurses, both registered and enrolled. It is headed by the Director of Nursing Services and Quality who oversees all the nursing care activities in the hospital. The department aims at maintaining high standards of nursing care in the hospital through implementation of the Primary health care Nursing.

The directorate is divided into several operational areas which are social welfare, catering services, central sterilization and supplies unit, laundry, tailoring and Hospital Quality improvement Unit. The directorate of nursing is deputized by Block Managers who supervises patients nursing care activities in their blocks, oversees adherence of nurses to professional ethics, manages the patient’s care setting (cleanliness, movement of people, security), ensures resources for patient treatment and care are in place (drugs, equipment, supplies, respond to clients and staff complaints.


Hospital Quality improvement unit is charged with monitoring infection prevention control activities at the hospital, delivery of quality health services, conducting training on infection prevention control, waste disposal, Hospital cleanliness, development of procedure manuals, standards operating procedures, guidelines and policies. This is done in collaboration of hospital departments, the unit is also charged with the responsibility of coordinating and monitoring the Health Education and Counseling.

Hospital Central Sterilization and Supplies unit deals with sterilization of all hospital equipment and supplies, distribution of sterilized equipment to clinical service delivery points and collect back used equipment for cleaning and sterilization, packing of drums and make estimates of required surgical equipment in various operation theatres.
